Julian Abele, Chief Designer for the Horace Trumbauer Firm
Julian Abele, Chief Designer for the Horace Trumbauer Firm. Abele, one of the foremost architects in Philadelphia, was also African American. As the Chief Designer for the Horace Trumbauer firm, he was in charge of designing buildings all over Duke's campuses. Since the South was still segregated, many of his designs included segregated facilities, as seen in the West Campus Union blueprint. University Archives Photograph Collection, 1861-[ongoing].
