Vilma EspÃn Guillois de Castro (1930-2007), was a member of the core revolutionary group surrounding Fidel Castro and wife of President Raúl Castro. EspÃn came from a well to do family from Santiago, Cuba’s second largest city. EspÃn founded the Cuban Women’s Federation, one of the principal mass organizations with over three million members, and was its president until her death. Throughout the revolutionary period she was known as “the first lady of Cuba,†Havana, February 1964
