The pennyroyal plant has been understood since antiquity to contain a powerful substance that promotes menstruation. Although ads for the pill have never been explicit, the public has used it for centuries to stop the normal continuation of a pregnancy. It is important to note that the National Library of Medicine cautions that pennyroyal may induce abortion but “can kill the mother or cause her irreversible kidney and liver damage.”
