The exhibition in the Mary Duke Biddle Room celebrates the opening of the newly renovated David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library by bringing together an extraordinary selection of materials by women and men who aspired to change the world.

“Dreamers and Dissenters” highlights over sixty-five books, manuscripts, photographs, recordings, and artifacts from the Rubenstein’s incomparable holdings, which number over 350,000 print items and more than 20 million items in manuscript and archival collections. Some of the rarities on display are celebrated landmarks of law, literature, and culture. Many document pivotal moments in history. A few are more incidental or ephemeral in nature, embedding a call for change within the rhythm of daily life. All of them are the expressions of visionary minds who did something new, broke the rules, or demanded a world better than their own.
