Advertisements, Consumerism and the Rise of the Electric Belt
The rise of electrotherapy and the use of battery powered medical devices at home coincided with the rise of mass marketing and advertising in the United States. Electrotherapy device companies used color-filled advertisements with images of electric currents, floating angel-like figures and lightning strikes to promote the potential benefits of their product. Here are some examples of advertisements for electric belts(one promising to cure impotency). The German Electric Company was one of the most successful electric belt companies in the United States.
