The widow of Joseph Bernardo de Hogal inherited a well-equipped and successful print shop upon her husband’s death in 1741. She continued managing the shop, located on the calle de las Capuchinas in Mexico City, until 1755. She printed a number of important works, including both volumes of a description of the provinces of New Spain ordered by Philip V, Teatro americano by Jose Antonio Villaseñor y Sanchez. Her successors took over the business under the name Herederos de la Viuda de Hogal.. -
A discourse occasioned by the death of the Reverend Mr. Nathaniel Clap: pastor of a church at Newport on Rhode-Island, on October 30 1745, in the 78th year of his age
Boston-native Ann Smith Franklin married James Franklin (brother of founding father Benjamin Franklin) in 1723. They established the first independent newspaper in New England, the New England Courant. The Franklins later moved to Newport, Rhode Island, and founded that colony’s first newspaper. Ann set type, ran the press, and sold the newspapers and books they published. When James died in 1735, leaving her with five small children, she took over the business and successfully petitioned to become the official printer for the colony. -
“Picquart élargi. D’après un dessin d’un jeune dreyfusard,” (Picquart Aggrandized. After a drawing by a young dreyfusard)
Caran d’Ache belittles the Dreyfusard campaign by depicting Picquart’s supporters as largely female, tumbling over themselves to offer him flowers. In the foreground, Madame Gustave Kahn, a Catholic poet who converted to Judaism, is caught in an act of unchecked violence as she strangles a Jesuit.
Like Caran d’Ache’s Journaleux caricature, this satire is another attempt to ridicule Dreyfus’ supporters. Caran d’Ache imitates the naïve style of children’s drawings, representing Colonel Picquart with a halo and angel’s wings upon his exit from the Cherche-Midi military prison in Paris. Picquart, who became a popular hero in Dreyfusard journalism, had been accumulating evidence against Major Esterhazy since Dreyfus’s sentence in 1894.This culminated between 1896 and 1898, when Esterhazy was accused of penning the bordereau that led to Dreyfus’s conviction and exile. Esterhazy was acquitted, after which Picquart himself was put on trial for forgery, as the French military scrambled to reestablish its reputation. -
“Journaleux,” (Journalists)
Journalists played a crucial role in forming the public’s opinions, as the immediate response to Émile Zola’s “j’Accuse” demonstrates. However, the chorus of intellectuals defending Zola threatened anti-Dreyfusard writers and journalists whose livelihood depended on slandering the Captain and his supporters. In this sketch by the famous anti-Dreyfusard Caran d’Ache, the bohemian journalist of the Left is depicted as a dandy opportunist, riding the wave of opinion. He confides that his crisp new shirt was bought not with an inheritance, but thanks to his investment in this new cause. You too, he tells his friend, can look this good, and all it takes is peppering your prose with words like “innocent,” “martyr,” and “hero.” -
Complete Historical, Chronological, and Geographical American Atlas.
At the time of its publication, Carey’s American Atlas was the most detailed atlas to be produced in the United States. It includes individual color maps of each state and a map depicting the West by Stephen H. Long. Substantial historical background text accompanies each map. Fielding Lucas, the prominent Baltimore printer, was the principal engraver. By 1822, Indiana and Illinois had become states. The large Missouri Territory and smaller “Arkansa” Territory (both part of the Louisiana Purchase) are visible to the West. Texas would not become a sovereign republic until 1836.Tags lincoln-section-1 -
