Text:
My recent check for the month of February, 1972, showed a deduction that I question. Unfortunately, we had two close family members die in one week and the funerals were on a Thursday and Friday. The one on Friday was for my grandmother and it was for this funeral that my pay was reduced.
When checking with Carolyn Mosby, the Administrative Assistant in our Department, I was informed of the School's ruling that if the grandmother lives in the same home with you, it is considered a close relative. Is she less a grandmother because she doesn't live under my roof?
Mrs. Mosby also informed me that she wrote to you on this matter and as yet had not received a reply. It is hardly conceivable that this type of antiquated ruling is allowed to persist in a university known for its liberal views. Certainly, it is humane to allow the day of the funeral for a loved one.
I should like to request reconsideration of this pay deduction, and hope to hear from you soon.
