Mrs. Feigenbaum's request for leave of absence 7/31/72 thru 9/18/72 was denied by the Personnel Office. The denial is based on the University's policy requiring a minimum of one year of continuous employment to qualify for leave of absence. Mrs. Feigenbaum has been employed only eight months.
The Department and the Division requested reconsideration of the decision made by the Personnel Office, in light of the fact that Mrs. Feigenbaum's position as administrative secretary to Professor Marc Nerlove will definitely be kept open for her. Professor Nerlove has been very pleased with Mrs. Feigenbaum and would be most upset if anything prevented her return to work for him, following her surgery. (Mr. Nerlove has had two unpleasant experiences with previous secretaries at the University of Chicago and took great care in the selection of Mrs. Feigenbaum for the position.)
The Personnel Office was unable to alter its decision, but agreed to make a special exception to allow Mrs. Feigenbaum's vacation accrual thru July, 1972, (75.2 hours) to be restored when she is re-employed following the surgery, in September 1972.
In summary, when Mrs. Feigenbaum is re-hired in September, 1972, for purposes of vacation use and accrual, her employment date will be considered as the original date of employment in the Department of Economics, November, 1971. She will begin accrual of sick leave effective with the September date of employment, but will not have to wait the three-month period to use accrued sick leave.
