The Republican platform gave the GOP credit for the ongoing economic prosperity, expressed support for continuing prohibition, and pledged to continue the policies of the [Calvin] Coolidge administration. Anticipating the continued prosperity of the 1920s, the Republicans called for "a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage."

The Democratic nominee, Alfred Smith, was an anti-prohibitionist and the first Roman Catholic to run for President. Anti-Catholic prejudice against Smith was very strong, especially in the rural South. It was believed that Smith's allegiance would lie with the Pope and not with the United States.
