Defiant Bodies: Discourses on Intersex, 1573-2003
1741: Civic and Legal Discourse
Biological and historical discussion of intersex people with a focus on legal and religious issues is presented in this book. This seems to demonstrate a turning point in the discussion of intersex identity, as physicians began to turn away from older, mythologically or supernaturally inspired understandings of sexually ambiguous bodies and toward understandings motivated by the pursuit of facts and rationality, in line with the intellectual developments of the Enlightenment.
