The 60's at Duke: Rocking the (White, conservative) boat

While Edgemont was being shaken up by the arrival of Black residents, Duke's "lefty" minority was causing a scene on campus. Desegregation, labor rights, racial justice, and anti-war sentiments were in the air.

But keep in mind that this was the work of a small (albeit loud and active) group.

Wilhelmina Reuben-Cooke, Nathaniel White, Jr., and Mary Mitchell Harris were the first African-American undergraduates to receive their degrees from Duke in 1967.

Wilhemina Reuben-Cooke, one of the first 3 African-American undergraduates at Duke, was elected the first Black May Queen in 1967. This event was met with both support and vitriol.

Silent Vigil
The Duke Vigil was a silent demonstration at Duke University, April 5 - 11, 1968, following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Up to 1,400 students slept on the Chapel Quad, food services and housekeeping employees went on strike, and most students boycotted the dining halls in support of the employees.

About 200 non-academic employees walked off their job after a student rally honoring slain Dr. Martin Luther King. Many strikers from student cafeterias asked for $1.60 an hour, 35 cents more than the University was paying. 
Students supporting the strike boycotted the cafeterias, while some 250 students filled the cafeteria jobs so that the cafeterias could stay open.

Dow Chemical Demonstration, 5 February 1968
Students protested the affiliation of Duke University with the Dow Chemical Company, who produced napalm which was used in the Vietnam War. Dow had been on campus that day to recruit employees, and refused to answer questions regarding the production of napalm to be used in Vietnam. February 5, 1968.
