Charles Dickens: 200 Years of Commerce and Controversy

Dickens in the Family

Dickens photo album-title page

The title page of a Charles Dickens photo album containing scenes from the novels.

Part of Dickens’s success was his reputation as a source of wholesome entertainment for the entire family—his works were, in part, intended for reading aloud at the fireside. The extent of this success is evident in the many toys, amusements, and ancillary products for children and families which feature scenes and characters from his works. Within The Charles Dickens Album, probably dating from the 1880s, a family could preserve photographs of its members alongside beloved characters and scenes from their favorite Dickens works.
