Gwladys Edwards — bookbinder

The Courtship of Miles Standish

Creator(s):
Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth
Title:
The Courtship of Miles Standish
Publication/Origin:
London: George G. Harrap & Co., [ca. 1910s]
Description:
This binding by Gwladys Edwards of green goatskin over boards shows similar tooling techniques to those she used to bind Songs from the Plays of Shakespeare (1901) in a somewhat more restrained application for this smaller volume. The tulips, open dots, and hearts on the boards and spine are decorated with leather onlay. In this technique, binders adhere pieces of dyed leather to the surface of the covering leather. Edwards’ personal binder’s ticket is present: “This book was bound and tooled by Gwladys Edwards.”
