The mid-twentieth century brought the American civil rights movement and an awakening to the previously ignored Black consumer market. Advertisers and their marketers had to navigate Black consumer boycotts of companies that didn’t respect Black consumers or hire Black employees. Many consumer product companies made missteps, assuming they didn’t need a diverse staff to attract diverse consumers.
