Philanthropist, Environmentalist, Collector: Doris Duke and Her Estates
Harran
Based on the photographs found in the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Historical Archives, it is assumed that the Cromwells and their companions made a side trip to Harran prior to flying to Istanbul. Harran is on the border between Turkey and Syria. Harran is famous for its traditional 'beehive' adobe houses, (like those pictured above) constructed entirely without wood. The design of these makes them cool inside (essential in this part of the world) and is thought to have been unchanged for at least 3,000 years. To learn more about Harran, click here.
