LATINX STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS
By the late 1980s, Latinx students begin to organize with other students of color for the greater purpose of addressing racial, ethnic, and economic discrimination on campus. This case displays materials from the Spanish American Latin Student Association (SALSA), La Unidad Latino (or Lambda Upsilon Lambda; LUL), and Mi Gente. These were the first student organizations formed specifically by Latinx students, for Latinx students. Spectrum, also represented here, included other students of color as well. It is important to spotlight the lack of documentation of Latinx organizations throughout Duke’s history and how this may have caused silences in the exhibit as a whole.

SALSA was the first group of its kind, created by Latinx students for Latinx students, and is most closely related to the Latinx groups we see at Duke today. It was founded in 1981 and lasted until 1991. Its focus on unity is similar to the one declared by the members of the earlier Club Panamericano. However, where Club Panamericano encouraged unity, SALSA celebrated the diverse experiences of a racial/ethnic group in the United States.

In 1992 Mi Gente was formed.

En 1992 Mi Gente se fundó.

Lambda Upsilon Lambda is a fraternal organization for men interested in serving their Latinx communities, chartered at Duke in 1995.

Spectrum formed six years after the Spanish American Latin Student Association. It was created by students of multiple minority cultural groups, including SALSA and the Students of the Caribbean Association (SOCA), in an effort to work together across multiple racial, religious, and ethnic organizations.
